COEUR d'ALENE - More than $7,000 worth of goods was stolen from a Coeur d'Alene home, and another home in the Sanders Beach area was broken into, as burglars continue to carry off jewelry, electronics and firearms.

According to a police report, a home in the 1000 block of east Foster was burglarized sometime between Friday and Monday while owners were away.

Jewelry valued at $5,000, a laptop, $200 cash hidden in a vase, a passport, birth certificates and Social Security cards were taken.

It appeared the burglars took their time to search drawers, cabinets, closets and even dig through bags of clothing.

Police did not determine how the home was entered, but believe the suspects left through the garage door.

A home in the 500 block of South 13th was reported burglarized between July 11 and July 18. The owner said several pieces of jewelry were missing from a jewelry box on top of a dresser.

She told police she leaves the back door unlocked occasionally when she leaves the residence, and believes someone entered the home and stole the jewelry while she was away.

Residential burglaries in Coeur d'Alene are up.

In June 2011, there were 12 burglaries reported. This year, 31 were reported in June. The total for the first six months of 2011 was 107. The first six months of 2012, there were 140 reported burglaries.

Police say thieves are targeting items that can be easily carried off and then sold. They advise home owners to lock doors and windows and leave lights on when away.

A meeting to form a Block Watch group in the Sanders Beach area is scheduled tonight. Anyone interested in attending should call Coeur d'Alene police Sgt. Christie Wood, 769-2320.
