Follow the rules

Former Coeur d'Alene Chamber of Commerce president Patrick H. McGaughey has been named the keynote speaker for the 2013 Inland Northwest Nonprofit Summit on Wednesday.
McGaughey, now a business consultant, recently produced an audio CD and e-book titled "157 Rules for Executive Success in Organization Management."
McGaughey's list features guideposts for organization executives and employees for managing, leading and funding nonprofit organizations.
"The first rule understood by all veteran nonprofit executives is to always put a volunteer between you and the problem," McGaughey said in a news release.
He said it's a rule every new nonprofit executive must learn and it's the rule every veteran must remember. Face to face confrontations are unhealthy for any organization and for an executive's career, he said.
Other rules include: "No good deed goes unpunished" and "We can't pay new bills with old income."
Nonprofit organizations must never allow the tax status of being a "not-for-profit" confuse their ability to earn money, he said.
At the Coeur d'Alene chamber he teamed with volunteers to build it into a 1,000-member organization and held funding events exceeding the $200,000 income level.
Today, he consults with a variety of nonprofit organizations including charities, churches, industry associations and other chambers of commerce.
The Spokane Valley Chamber of Commerce will present the 2013 Inland Northwest Nonprofit Summit at the Mirabeau Park Hotel and Conference Center. It runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
McGaughey will feature his "157 Rules" and will conclude the program with the luncheon keynote titled: "They didn't hire us to break even."
Registration for the summit is $89 for the first representative from each nonprofit organization and $69 per person for additional organization representatives.
The first 40 nonprofit organizations to register will receive a $50 scholarship (one per organization) from the Spokane Teacher's Credit Union (STCU) as they co-sponsor the event.
Lunch is included with each registration and every attendee will also receive an audio CD studio version of the program to extend the experience and provide future reference.
