Kootenai Humane Society is inviting the community to submit photos of costume-clad pets for its annual Halloween Pet Costume Contest.
Development director Vicky Nelson said she had already received about 40 entries by Tuesday morning.
"They are hysterical," she said. "I don’t know how we’re going to pick just one."
The creative and fun photos have so far included a chocolate lab dressed up as one of the kids from "Harry Potter," complete with a scarf and hat, and a feline in a magician costume, with a magician's hat and magic wand.
"There's another one, a black and white dog, and they dressed him up like a panda," Nelson said. "They are amazing, just as cute as could be."
One winner for the best dog photo will receive a basket full of canine goodies, and the best feline costume photo winner will win a basket of cat-approved prizes.
"It’s just to have fun with your pet, spend time with your pet and make sure you're doing it safely. We don't want any animals to get hurt," Nelson said.
All photos need to be received by 9 a.m. Friday. Winners will be announced that afternoon.

Petals of radiant red, popping pink, vivid violet and pleasant peach were seen in the early Friday morning sunlight on the lawn of a home near Fernan Lake. Members of the Chapter AG Philanthropic Educational Organization carried trays of flowers and carefully organized pots as they prepared for about 700 geranium plants to go out into the community following a successful annual sale.

Cruising around a tall pine with a small measuring tape, Ava Stone examined the numbers and wrote them down on a paper secured to her clipboard. "It's the diameter, and then you take a clinometer from the 66 foot back and then the 100 foot back, then you look up and get the height to find out the board foot volume," she said Thursday morning.
