SANDPOINT — A 5-year-old boy nearly drowned Sunday in a swimming pool at Condo Del Sol, but was rescued by an 8-year-old girl and resuscitated by his mother.

The boy was visiting with his family, from Salt Lake City, Utah, when he fell into the pool, which graduates in depth from 5 to 3 1/2 feet, said Police Chief Mark Lockwood.

He had been playing around the pool all day, but around 8 p.m., someone noticed the boy was sinking to the bottom, Lockwood said.

An 8-year-old girl pulled him from the water and the mother, a registered nurse, quickly revived him with CPR.

"My officers were right around the corner and when they got there he was coming around," said Lockwood.

"She had the skill and the experience to do it."

Following the incident, the boy was taken to Bonner General Hospital.

An officer saw the boy on Monday and he appeared to be doing well, Lockwood said.

"He was up and about," he added.

Lockwood did not know how long the boy was in the water, but presumed it had not been long because of the boy's quick recovery. Names were not available.

The boy was lucky his mother he was rescued so quickly and his mother could revive him, said Lockwood.

"She had the skill and the experience to do it," he said.

"This turned out really, really great," Lockwood said.
