Davis wins one match in dual

MOSES LAKE - Anthony Vela looked 100 percent. Cody Hoiness battled from a 14-point deficit to pick up a pin at 140 pounds. Moses Lake scored eight pins in a blow to Davis.

Everything was going right for Moses Lake as it handed the Pirates' wrestling team a 76-4 loss.

"My college coach always said when things go right, win big and when things go wrong, win anyway," said Moses Lake head coach Nathan Stanley.

Things went exactly the way the Chiefs planned it. The only thing missing was a shutout, but that was expected with Davis' 103-pound junior Ivan Carbajal picking up a major decision on Moses Lake freshman John Silva.

Out of the eight pins, five came in the first minute, Vela and Matthew Palmer each picked up technical falls and Davis forfeited three matches to sum up the scoring for the Chiefs.

"I think all the boys were very aggressive," Stanley said. "I talked to all of them ahead of time and helped them understand that winning is a habit."

Vela came into the match having not wrestled since the Best of the West tournament before Christmas and the game plan was simple - test his strained left knee.

Vela spent 1 1/2 rounds taking down Davis' Rigo Lopez letting him go, running up a 28-12 score on the junior 125-pounder.

"I needed this match for this weekend so I could see how I would wrestle," Vela said about preparing for the University Tournament this weekend in Spokane.

"This weekend he will have some tough competition at the U-high tournament, especially with Cory Fish going to be there," Stanley said. Fish handed Vela his first loss of the season at the Inland Empire Tournament.

Following Vela, Jordan Hill was awarded a forfeit at 130 pounds, then Sean Hoiness needed only 28 seconds to throw the Pirates' J.D. Jarvis in a head-and-arm and pick up the pin. Cody Hoiness fell quickly to J.J. Padilla as the Davis sophomore rang up a 10-2 lead after the first round at 140 pounds.

Hoiness cut the lead to 10-5 in the second, then missed a head-and-arm and Padilla capitalized with a 2-point takedown and a 3-point nearfall for a 16-5 lead after two rounds.

Padilla hung on the verge of a technical fall with a 19-4 lead on Hoiness in the third when Hoiness went on a 5-point swing and caught Padilla in a head-and-arm for a late round pin with only 19 seconds left in the match.

"It showed a lot of guts and determination on his part to stay in it and also a lot of things he needs to work on," Stanley said about Hoiness' turnaround match.

Moses Lake's Thomas Courtright was awarded a forfeit at 145 pounds and teammate Ty Payne maneuvered his way for a second round pin over over Paul Lewis at 152 pounds.

A.J. Harra followed with a quick 38-second pin over Davis' Ryan Poage at 160 pounds and Moses Lake's Stevie Vasquez pinned Martin Nenamkin in 40 seconds at 189 pounds.

Brett Frederickson struggled early against the Pirates' Justin Smith, trailing 2-1 after the first round, but pinned the 215-pound senior 28 seconds into the second round.

Warren Jones pinned Sergio Guizar in 53 seconds for the final Moses Lake pin of the night.

Davis' bright side happened at 103 pounds where Carbajal defeated John Silva 14-4 for the only win of the dual. Palmer followed with an 18-3 technical fall over the Pirates' Jose Martinez at 112-pounds. Joe Vela was awarded a forfeit at 119 pounds for Moses Lake.
