Garfield scores winning hoop with eight seconds remaining

QUINCY — Trailing 49-42, the Lady Jacks outscored Cashmere 9-0 in the final 47 seconds to complete a remarkable come-from-behind victory Thursday night.

With the game tied and 15 seconds on the clock, Quincy called a time out to set up the final play.

The Lady Jacks found Allison Schaapman open for a long baseline jumper, but the shot didn't fall. However, Quincy's Katie Garfield was in perfect position to grab the rebound and score the go-ahead basket with eight seconds to play.

"That was part of the set play," said Quincy coach Cully Donovan. "If Allison missed the shot, she (Garfield) would be there to get the rebound."

Cashmere's final chance to tie the game was snuffed out by a Tashia Zamarron steal with a few seconds remaining.

"We worked a lot on situations like that this year," Donovan said. "They responded well."

With 41 seconds left in the game, Schaapman hit a pair of free throws to make the score 49-47.

Quincy's smothering defense of the Cashmere in-bounds forced a long pass that was intercepted by Zamarron. The Quincy guard broke toward the basket and was fouled on a layup attempt.

Zamarron sank both free throws to tie the game with 39 seconds to play.

With the game tied, Quincy chose to rely on their half-court defense to stop the Lady Bulldogs.

"We needed one stop, and we had confidence we could get that stop," Donovan said. "It's what we preach all year, defense and rebounding."

The Lady Jacks got their stop, and made the most of their final possession.

Down the stretch, defense and rebounding were crucial components of the Lady Jacks' comeback run.

Trailing 43-34 with just under six minutes to play, Quincy used a series of defensive stops to piece together a 5-0 scoring run.

With 2:52 to play, Zamarron jumped in front of a Lady Bulldog pass and was fouled by a Cashmere player. Zamarron hit both free throws to move the score to 45-41.

Later, Zamarron was fouled while grabbing a rebound on the defensive end. She hit 1 of 2 shots from the line to trim the Cashmere lead to three.

Two consecutive Bulldog field goals gave Cashmere its 49-42 lead.

Misses shots by Cashmere and clutch rebounding by Quincy allowed the Lady Jacks to score seven points in an eight second span.

Zamarron's game-tying free throws with 39 seconds to play completed the Quincy comeback run.

"She was clutch down the stretch," Donovan said of Zamarron. "She got the big steals and rebounds."

Zamarron ended the night with 13 points, eight steals and seven assists. Garfield led the Lady Jacks with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Schaapman had 10 points for Quincy, and Leigh Ann Huxtable grabbed 10 rebounds.

Royal avoids letdown against Connell

ROYAL CITY — Just two days removed from a tremendous 40-28 dual meet victory at defending 2A state champion Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls), it would have been understandable if the Knights came out flat against Connell, a team which on Thursday could only fill eight of 14 weight classes. Royal coach Ben Orth was aware as anyone of this possibility, and spoke to his team before the dual about staying focused.

EPHRATA - One way to judge the progress of a soccer team is to look at a game against a team they played early in the year, then compare the result to the rematch that takes place later in the season.
