Russell Roy, a long-time resident and supporter of the Flathead Valley community, passed away from his battle with cancer Wednesday evening, Nov. 15, 2006.

The life and legacy of Russ exemplifies a man who loved God, his country, family, friends and strangers.

Russell was born Sept. 4, 1924, in Bowdoinham, Maine, to Marion (Pelletier) and Walter Roy. He grew up with his older brother Richard in the Portland, Maine, area and had a love for the rock coast, lighthouses and the sea.

At age 17, Pearl Harbor was attacked by Japan, and he volunteered to serve his country in the Navy and Marines. Russ worked as a gunner and cook while on ships in the Atlantic and Pacific, and he experienced the tragedy of war and survived the sinking of his ships. He served in the military for seven years.

During the war, Russ met Doris Ruth Ramsey of Kalispell, and on April 21, 1944, they were married. Russ and Ruth settled in the Flathead Valley with their three children. While in the Flathead Valley, Russ worked at a variety of positions for Flathead Grocery, Elks Club, Conrad Cemetery and the Columbia Falls Aluminum Plant.

Russ's life was exemplified by service. He served as an Elder and numerous positions at the Central Christian Church; president of the Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 234; Master Mason Kalispell Lodge No. 42; and numerous associated Masonic organizations.

Russ had a great love for fellow veterans, and he encouraged and nurtured fellow soldiers residing during their final days at the Montana Veterans Home in Columbia Falls.

His favorite sports were bowling and baseball. He enjoyed camping, fishing, and hunting during his younger years; and traveling at any time.

Russ is survived by his beloved wife, Ruth, three children, Sharon and husband Dave Stroisch of Colville, Wash., Nancy Roy Johnson of Whitefish, and Russell L. Roy and wife Gail of Richmond, Texas. Russ delighted in his 14 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

Friends can meet with the family from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18, at Johnson Mortuary. Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 20, the Central Christian Church with inurnment at C.E. Conrad Memorial Cemetery.
