Moses Lake Council voted to support Proposition 1
SOAP LAKE — The Soap Lake City Council approved to advertise a public meeting to take place at the next council meeting to discuss support of the freeholders election Wednesday night.
They hope to hear several points of view from citizens who are either for or against Proposition 1, Mayor Wayne Hovde said.
Moses Lake Mayor Ron C. Covey sent a letter to the council urging them to consider supporting the proposition.
The Moses Lake City Council approved a resolution to support the freeholders election at their previous council meeting. It allows citizens to review the county government, which is a positive move for the community, Covey said. The council agreed to send letters to other cities in Grant County to join them in support.
Hovde declared he was neither for or against the proposition at this point and the resolution was only for discussion Wednesday.
Hovde discussed implications with the council.
Supporting the passage of Proposition 1 allows 21 elected freeholders to review county government, he clarified. It allows for a chance to improve county government and allows for voters to decide county government functions.
"It doesn't take anything away from voters, it gives them a chance (to review county government)," he said.
The next Soap Lake council meeting is Nov. 1 at 7 p.m.
