Book sale raises money for furniture, programs

MOSES LAKE — Friends of the Library is hosting its annual book sale in October to generate revenue for the Moses Lake Public Library.

The organization is responsible for the library's copy machine, several furnishings and drapes, and they also partially paid for the automatic doors — all with revenue generated from the book sale.

Friends of the Library plans to hold this year's sale on Tuesday, Oct. 7 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the library.

"We did some flooring. We've done some desks, bookshelves," said member Bessie Lynch, naming some of the items the fundraiser generated money toward. The money also goes toward children's activities including the summer reading program and story times, staff support and the Kiwanis dictionary program, which provides dictionaries to Moses Lake third grade students.

"I don't know what we'd do without that copy machine," said Connie Kuhlmann, branch manager and member of Friends of the Library.

Last year, organizers walked away with $1,000 by selling paperbacks for 25 cents, hardbacks for 50 cents and specialty books for no more than $5.

"It's the only fundraiser that we have," Lynch said of the book sale.

Friends of the Library are currently seeking donations of books that are in good condition. So far, the community turned in an estimated 2,000 books. Any left over at the end of the year are saved until next year. Some are donated to other causes.

"We appreciate that support," said Glenna Bingham, who worked in the library from the 1950s until about 15 years ago.
