Warden loses principal

OTHELLO — Warden Middle School Principal Mike Villarreal is joining the Othello School District in July as assistant superintendent.

The school board voted Monday to hire him for the position. He replaces Chuck Wheaton, who served as interim assistant superintendent through the school year. He was selected from two final candidates.

"Mike will do a great job here," said board member Charles Garcia.

Villarreal was born in Othello and lives in the city with his wife Nani. He has five children, and three attend school in the district.

"I appreciate the opportunity to come and serve and work with you and work with the kids," he told the board.

Villarreal, who taught third and sixth grades in Warden, spent the past eight years as middle school principal. He called his time working in Warden a blessing.

After earning his bachelor degree in elementary education at Weber State University in Utah, Villarreal earned a master's degree in bilingual English as a second language and a master's degree in school administration, both through Heritage University. He is currently working toward his doctorate degree.

He served as adjunct professor at Heritage University and adjunct instructor at Big Bend Community College.

His contract in Othello starts July 1.

Othello School District Superintendent George Juarez said he has known Villarreal's parents for years.

"I know we look forward, and I look forward, to having you on board," Juarez said.
