Longtime Othello area man runs as port incumbent

OTHELLO — Since he joined the Port of Othello, Richard Garza thinks the district has been able to accomplish some of its goals.

"There's really exciting things going on right now, and I think I can contribute to the betterment of the Port of Othello," said Garza, who first became a commissioner in September 2006.

The incumbent commissioner, Garza faces Terry Thompson in the November elections for Port of Othello Commissioner District No. 1.

Garza plans to bring his ideas to the board and be careful to make decisions based upon what would be best for Othello.

A lifelong Othello area resident, he pointed to his knowledge of the area and the surrounding areas, as far as what kind of businesses are compatible.

"Bringing those ideas together and collaborating with the other commissioners to come up with the best ideas as far as bringing new industry into Othello, and just a lot of contacts and connections I have," he said.

Garza said citizens should vote for him because he has their best interests at heart.

"The most critical issue for the Othello port would be the need for growth," he said. "Industrial and commercial businesses coming into the area to help support the housing being developed right now and the citizens who are in Othello, just to have more economical opportunities for our families."

The same need holds true for the greater Othello area, Garza said.

"Industrial and commercial development of Othello to help support the farming business and the surrounding businesses," he said. "The biggest thing is to create diversification for Othello, not only in the farming industry but in various manufacturing-type industries. That's critical to the area for growth."

Garza said he supports growth 100 percent.

"I think that's what we need the most," he said. "I would use my experience and knowledge to help make the best decisions for the betterment of Othello."
