Different names suggested
MOSES LAKE — The Moses Lake City Council discussed the naming and branding of Moses Lake Friday and Saturday at their annual retreat.
The council was not pleased with the names conjured up by Destination Development Inc.
The company was contracted to find a brand for Moses Lake to make it appealing to tourists. Destination came up with names and signage ideas for the downtown area.
"I'm not sure I want to leave it up to some of these things suggested on the list," Mayor Ron Covey said.
Laketown Landing seems to be a popular one, City Manager Joe Gavinski said.
"I don't think it fits, I really don't," Councilmember Brent Reese said.
Covey suggested Third Street Station or Third Street Plaza. He chose to use street rather than avenue because it rolls off the tongue, he said.
Council didn't seem to like those ideas either because calling the avenue a street did not make sense to them.
"I don't like Third Street when its Third Avenue," Councilmember Richard Pearce said.
The names are to describe the area from Parker Horn to Pelican Horn and from Balsam Street to Beech Street.
The name favored by the Destination company is Peninsula Place, but council was not pleased by that idea either.
Council discussed the logos suggested for the city.
"They still don't tell me what we have to offer when it says "splash," Councilmember James Liebrecht said.
Six logos were provided. Two state "splash" within the logos to go with the water park theme suggested for the city.
Parks and Recreation Director Spencer Grigg came up with a few suggestions for naming the aquatic center and the flow rider.
Surf and Slide Water Park, Vay Cay Bay and Rippin' Time were suggested.
"The word water park is pretty common," City Manager Joe Gavinski said. "It's hard to do better than that."
Councilmember Brent Reese suggested H2O Park.
