OTHELLO — Three migrant camps were evacuated due to poor living conditions near Othello, displacing nearly 90 residents in late May.

The camps are located near the 600 block of Saddle Road.

The first inspection was conducted at an area known as Green Camp on May 22, Manager of the Migrant Farm Worker Housing Program with the Department of Health, Debra Fisher said.

The inspection was conducted by the state Department of Health, the Adams County health Department and the local building and planning department.

More than 30 migrants were relocated to emergency housing in Mattawa or another camp area, she said.

A notice advising the camp manager to cease operations was issued immediately.

Upon inspection, a failed septic system was discovered. It was located a few feet away from the trailers, she said.

"It's questionable if it was safe," Fisher said.

Structural damage included holes in the floors, walls and ceilings, soggy floors and some were splitting at the seams.

"You could see right through the floor in some places," she said.

Faulty electrical wiring was found and the water source was questionable. It is unknown if the water source coming from a nearby well is safe to drink, she said.

Two more camps were inspected in the same area with similar conditions May 31.

The camps were ordered to cease operations and nearly 50 residents were relocated to emergency housing in Othello and some were moved to the Cabana Motel.

Health issued 10-day vouchers to all relocated residents to pay for their housing, she said. After the 10 days, they are responsible for paying the bill. Each emergency housing area is offering a discount to the relocated to ensure their stay, she added.

The owners of the evacuated camps are seeking information to bring the housing up to proper living standards, Fisher said.
