Golf invite successful for many

OTHELLO — The Othello Golf Club hosted the fourth annual Alamo Invitational on June 9-10.

The invitational featured two teams, the Gringos and the Latinos. Hector Garza captained the Latinos and Robert Schutte captained the Gringos.

Each team featured 30 players. The first day was played under scramble and scotchball formats, nine holes each, with three possible points per day for each two-man pairing.

On day two, the format switched to Chapman System team play on the front nine, with each team member hitting the other's next shot. The Latinos scored 24 points to the Gringos' 21 and held on for the victory, 50-40.

Deuce pot winners included Scott Parrish, Jake Para, Robert Schutte, Saul Martinez Sr., Saul Martinez Jr., Santos Garza, Sammy Rocha, Stan Buck, Mitch Buck and Juan Garza.

Only two skins were awarded. Doug Buck took one on hole No. 11 and the second went to Tom Harrison on No. 16.

Long drive winners included Joel Garza, Arnell Garza, Samson Martinez and Sam Martinez.

Closest-to-pin winners were Jake Para (four feet on No. 8); Drew Roosma (9 feet, 5 1/2 inches on No. 8); Larry Gonzalez (16 feet, 6 inches on No. 17); Samson Martinez (15-08 on No. 17); Wayne Schutte (5-09 1/2 on No. 4); and Sammy Rocha (5-01 on No. 13).

The Latinos' duo of Jesse Valdez and Santos Garza scored the most points and were given Most Valuable Player awards.

The tournament thanks its sponsors for a successful event in which a portion of the proceeds are given to student scholarship programs.
