Allows for easier construction and maintenance

SOAP LAKE — The Soap Lake Lava Lite will be devoid of moving parts to simulate lava.

Councilmember Barney Berg provided a project update during the Wednesday night council meeting after speaking with project consultants.

The consultants provided positive feedback about constructing the structure and chose an alternative to using mechanical parts to simulate the lava movement. Instead of moving parts, a series of theatrical stage lights will be used, he said.

The change allows for easier construction, lower building costs and cuts down on maintenance needs.

The consultants advised the Lava Lite will sit on a concrete foundation, Berg said. A pole will go up the center of the lite for structural support.

A final recommendation from the consultants is expected next week, Mayor Wayne Hovde said. The city is waiting to find out if the materials can be stored at the site located near Lava Links golf course.

Currently the Lava Lite materials are stored at the Port of Ephrata. The city pays $600 per month for the storage.
