Moses Lake wins one, loses one in final inning

YAKIMA - The Moses Lake Chiefs lost the first game of their Columbia Basin League baseball doubleheader with the Davis Pirates 6-5 Tuesday, then came back with a 1-0 victory in the second game to finish their league schedule at 6-6.

In the first game, Moses Lake fell behind 2-1 early before picking up a pair of runs in the fifth inning to take a 3-2 lead. Davis jumped back on top with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning for a 5-3 lead, but Moses Lake evened things up at five with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh.

The game ended suddenly for the Chiefs when Davis' Saby Martinez hit a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh to give the Pirates the win.

The Chiefs turned the tables on Davis in the second game, as Chase Hunter drove in the game's only run with a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh inning.

The one run would be enough for Moses Lake starting pitcher Troy Stephens, who allowed just four hits while striking out seven for the complete-game victory.

Josh Martinez was 3 for 4 with a double in the first game for Moses Lake, while Jacob Lacelle and Matt Valdez each went 1 for 3. In the second game, Brett Fredericksen was 2 for 3 with a double and Aaron Morice went 2 for 4.

The Chiefs, who finished the CBL regular season with a 6-6 record, currently sit in third place in the standings. Depending on the outcome of today's league games, Moses Lake could finish anywhere from second to fourth in the final CBL standings.

The Chiefs host the Southridge Suns today in a nonleague matchup to conclude the regular season.

Moses Lake begins district tournament play next Friday, with a time and location yet to be determined.
