Looking to fill vacant council position

QUINCY - The Quincy City Council appointed a new mayor and mayor pro-tem during a Tuesday night council meeting.

Council unanimously approved for mayor pro-tem Jim Hemberry to fill the vacant mayor's position.

Finance Officer Sue Miller administered the oath of office during the meeting.

The mayor position became vacant when Dick Zimbelman resigned Sept. 5.

Zimbelman cited leadership reasons in his letter of resignation to the city.

Council unanimously approved to appoint Councilmember Paul Worley to fill the mayor pro-tem position.

Worley's previous position as seat number four remains vacant.

During the meeting citizen Daniel Gates said he is interested in filling the vacant position on the council.

"Dan and I are good friends and I think he would do a bang-up job," Councilmember Scott Lybbert said.

Councilmember Tony Gonzalez said he agreed with Lybbert but thought it would be a good idea to open the opportunity to serve council to the public before making a decision.

Lybbert moved to allow the position to be open to the public. Council unanimously approved.

Applications for the vacant council position are available at Quincy City Hall and are due Sept. 28. Council will appoint someone to the vacant position during their Oct. 2 meeting.
