Contest continues to grow

MOSES LAKE - Judges evaluated 33 poster entries for the Columbia Basin Farmers Market and chose a winner from Moses Lake.

Gloria Knudson won the adult portion of the contest with her poster featuring a farm scene, landscapes and crops superimposed over a variety of fruits and vegetables, Farmers Market Vice-Chair Mark Amara said. The entry was chosen for its clean lines and it represented an array of produce at the farmers market.

The poster was entitled "Farmer's Bounty."

Knudson won $250 and the poster will be reproduced 500 times and posted around Grant County informing people where and when the farmers market is, Amara said.

It was the first time she entered, Knudson said. She chose to compose the watercolor image because she was intrigued with the farmers market and the quality of the produce.

Knudson taught art classes in the past and is the president of the desert artists program.

The second-place winner is Royal City High School senior Lorena Sosa. She submitted a poster featuring hands holding an apple, Amara said. Behind the hands is a variety of fruits and vegetables. She won $50.

Royal City High School junior Brittney Skaggs won third place and $50. Her poster was a three-dimensional image showing a series of crops and fields.

Three Moses Lake Christian Academy second-graders won the youth portion of the competition.

Tiffany Tofani-Franzay won $10 for first place. Samuel Roever won $5 for second place and Morgan Yamane won $5 for third place.

Amara said the youth competition posters will not be reproduced. The youth contest is to encourage children to get involved with art and community activities.

Amara said the poster contest is gaining popularity. There were a few more entries this year.

He said the contest benefits the farmers market and the artists by publicizing the market and showcasing the artists' talents.

Amara said there was a fourth place poster entry in the contest worth mentioning although it didn't win an award.

Jordan Delay of Royal City designed a poster featuring two people sitting on a larger than life carrot. Amara said the judges liked the image because it portrayed a whimsical view of the farmers market.
