CLARK FORK — A Clark Fork man was arrested Sunday for allegedly opening fire on his stepfather with a high-powered rifle. There were no injuries reported.

Cody Nicholas Pitts is charged with attempted first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated assault and resisting an officer. He is being held on $500,000 bail and a public defender has been appointed to represent him.

Pitts was also ordered to have no contact with the three people identified as victims in the case.

Bonner County Sheriff’s deputies and state law officers were summoned to the 100 block of Third Avenue after dispatchers received a report of shots being fired at about 2:45 p.m.

Pitts, 20, allegedly fled the scene when law enforcement arrived, but was apprehended near the corner of Mill Street, which is about a block away from where the shooting occurred. Pitts allegedly continued to struggle and ignored repeated commands to comply, which resulted in him being shocked with a Tazer, a deputy’s report said.

Medical personnel evaluated Pitts before he was taken to the jail.

Charging papers say Pitts fired a .30-06 rifle at his stepfather. He’s further charged with threatening his stepfather and two other Clark Fork men with the weapon. Pitts’ stepfather told a deputy two of the shots fired in his direction came from his stepson’s bedroom window. The third shot was reportedly fired from the porch.

One of the gunshots passed through a fence and entered an adjacent residence, the report said.

Prosecutor Phil Robinson said the gunfire broke out during a verbal argument between Pitts and his stepfather, but it’s not clear what the two were arguing about.
