EPHRATA— Under the Saturday night lights in Eastern Washington, the Ephrata Raceway Park will host it's largest show of the year.

Participants from the American Speed Association (ASA) and the Northwest Sprint car Racing Association (NSRA) will take to the quarter-mile track for the Rebel Jackson Memorial Race Saturday night.

Ephrata Raceway Park co-owner Bob Witte said he expects a large turnout at the Ephrata track.

"We expect about 30 cars," he said.

Don Kudrna of Othello will drive one of two vehicles entered into the race by sprint car owner Red Perkins.

"We have been working on the cars since last Thursday," Kudrna said. "The action will be really exciting."

The vehicles are equipped with 360-cubic inch racing engines that generate more than 700 horsepower.

The engines propel drivers around the quarter-mile track at more than 100 mph.

Saturday night's event will also feature the youth hornets racing class.

The youth event allows children to try their hand at racing without the high cost associated with the sport, Witte said.

"It's what they do," he said. "The parents put the kids in the old car and give them a taste of racing."

The local short track racing circuit is thriving in Ephrata, Witte said.

"We've got a pretty good deal going here," he said. "It's better now than it's ever been."
