CAREYWOOD - One person was killed Wednesday and several others were severely injured in a fiery two-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 95.

Idaho State Police confirmed the fatality but further information was not immediately available late Wednesday.

The head-on crash happened at about 5:30 p.m. north of Granite Hill. Alcohol was a factor in the crash, according to authorities.

One of the vehicles, which contained a mother and an infant, reportedly caught fire and trapped its occupants. The mother and child were taken to Kootenai Medical Center in Coeur d'Alene. Another person in the vehicle was apparently killed.

The driver of the other vehicle was also critically injured, according to television news reports.

The crash blocked the highway and heavy traffic hampered efforts of emergency workers to reach the scene from the north. A MedStar Northwest air ambulance was dispatched, but was reportedly waved off and did not transport any patients.
