FEDERAL WAY - Marshall Goodrich was the Chiefs' top individual as the Moses Lake boys swimming team took 14th at the Kentridge Invitational on Saturday.

Goodrich's time of 5 minutes, 1.75 seconds was good enough for eighth in the 500-yard freestyle, and it also earned him an automatic berth into the 4A state championships.

Goodrich was also part of two Moses Lake relay teams. The 200-yard freestyle group of Jeremy Grant, Nick Kardong, Eric Butterfield and Goodrich placed 14th, while the 200-yard medley foursome of Grant, Austin Massart, Goodrich and Butterfield came in 21st.

The Chiefs scored 105 points for 14th place in the team standings. Omaha, Neb., won the event, followed by Washington 4A power Snohomish and 3A power Mercer Island. Moses Lake head coach Tony St. Onge called the Kentridge Invitational an elite event, the toughest his team will see prior to state.

In the diving competition, Moses Lake's Jay Bowser and Chad Borg finished seventh and eighth, respectively. Butterfield was 19th in the 200-yard freestyle and 20th in the 100-yard freestyle.

Grant took 22nd in the 50-yard freestyle, while Goodrich took 22nd in the 200 individual medley.

"Marshall Goodrich was definitely the athlete of the meet for Moses Lake," St. Onge said via e-mail. "Marshall has outworked everyone on the team this past year and is the first Chief to quality for the state meet this year."

Moses Lake's divers compete again on Friday at 3 p.m. at Central Washington University in Ellensburg. The whole team travels to Whitman College in Walla Walla on Saturday, an 11 a.m. start.
