To be called Sage Point Elementary School

MOSES LAKE - Moses Lake's first new elementary school in more than 50 years may not be completed yet, but it does have a name.

Selected by a committee and voted on by the Moses Lake School District Board of Directors Friday, the school's name is Sage Point Elementary School.

The board unanimously approved the name.

Special Assistant to the Superintendent P.J. De Benedetti said the committee recommending the name was made up of four community members, two staff members, a classified employee, a classified manager and a principal.

"Early on we narrowed it down to four names that we really liked - that's South Pointe Elementary, Lake Pointe Elementary, Neppel Elementary and Sage Pointe Elementary," De Benedetti said.

At first, committee members included an "e" in "Pointe," but at the next meeting, members agreed they liked "Point" better without the "e," De Benedetti said.

"The more we talked about it, Sage Point really emerged as the most popular choice unanimously for the committee," he said.

"As they talked about it they thought that Sage Point really fit, because if you look on the map, that that part of the peninsula really does come down to a point," De Benedetti said.

In addition, sage is common in the Moses Lake area, he added.

Committee members felt the name of the school and the theme, the architects were working on, fit well together, he added.

According to De Benedetti, the district plans to put the project out to bid at the end of March. The school is going to sit between Peninsula Drive and Lakeshore Drive.
