Area teams fail to make championship game
MOSES LAKE - Teams from North Washington came to Moses Lake to compete in the 10-year-old Cal Ripken state tournament at Larson Playfield over the Fourth of July weekend.
Local teams from Moses Lake, Othello, and Quincy competed in pool play against teams from North Washington before being seeded in the 11-team tournament.
Moses Lake league president and Cal Ripken state representative Ray Lopez said the tournament was a success for the Moses Lake community.
"It was a great tournament," he said." We saw some great sportsmanship and we had good support from league parents."
The tournament was set up with two round-robin pools to determine seeding for the state tournament. In pool A, Quincy finished third (2-1) and Moses Lake finished fourth (2-1). While Moses Lake and Quincy finished with identical records in pool play, Quincy earned the Pool A tie-breaker with a 9-6 head to head victory over Moses Lake on Thursday. Othello (0-3) finished in fifth place in pool B.
Eastmont 16, Moses Lake 1
In Moses Lake's first tournament game following pool play, Moses Lake fell to eventual North Washington state champion Eastmont.
"Defensively Moses Lake played well," Lopez said. "We just couldn't get the bats going." Moses Lake finished the weekend with a record of 2-2.
Othello 25, Quincy 10
After scoring only seven runs in three pool B losses, Othello's offense came alive as Othello defeated Quincy 25-10 in the first round of the state tournament. Following its 25-10 loss to Othello, Quincy finished the tournament with a record of 2-2.
Bellingham 9, Othello 0
Despite scoring 25 runs against Quincy, Othello could not manage a run in its shutout defeat to Bellingham. After advancing to the second round of the state tournament, Othello finished the tournament with a record of 1-3.
