MOSES LAKE - A Moses Lake youth exceeded her mother's expectations when she took home several medals at the Special Olympics state competition earlier this month at Fort Lewis, Wash.

Kailee Truman, 8, won a gold medal for the 50-meter dash, a silver medal for the 100-meter walk and a bronze medal for the softball throw.

It was her first time competing at a state competition, Kailee's mother Jodi said.

"We were in tears," she said. "We were so excited."

When Kailee crossed the finish line, her mother could hear her yelling, "I did it, I did it!"

"She knew it was business and business only," Jodi laughed about Kailee's quick dash to the finish line.

The majority of athletes the 8-year-old competed against where older than her. Her competition age bracket was ages 8 to 14.

"She was one of the youngest (at the competition)," Jodi said.

Program volunteers ensure the athletes in all the age brackets have a good time, she said.

"Everybody gets an award," Jodi said. "They love being there, it's a life-changing event."

She said the social interaction is beneficial to Kailee and the other participants. Jodi said the coaches describe her daughter as vibrant and social since she began the program.

Kailee has gained friendships from the program and shares wins with the other athletes.

Tyler Hare, 21, won a silver medal for the 50-meter dash, Jodi said. Tyler celebrated his award at the event with Kailee and her family.

"The state competition was the most heartfelt experience I have ever had," she said.

The program also serves as a networking tool for families of disabled children.

Parents can meet with other parents and gain new perspectives and support, she said.

The upcoming sports offered through the Special Olympics are softball and bowling. Kailee plans to participate in bowling, Jodi said.

Jodi said she is excited to bowl and can't wait to start.
