The Superior Tennis Team and some Superior locals hit the tennis courts this week for some lessons and preparation for a summer tennis season.

Three adults and nine children participated in a tennis camp with Superior tennis coach Rick Berreth last week.

The camp included one week of tennis lessons. They met at the Superior High School tennis courts in separate groups, two hours at a time.

The lessons went on Monday through Thursday, and there were lessons planned for the following Monday, but Berreth said many people did not show up because of the bad weather.

Berreth said that it was a great way for his high school tennis players to stay sharp in the off season and for their parents to get involved as well.

“I have a lot of them excited about playing all summer long,” Berreth said.

Berreth said that several of his high school tennis players plan on participating in tournaments in Missoula and elsewhere. He added that this will be great for the team and will really help them next season.

Berreth said that after all the interest he had in tennis camp he has decided to help put together a summer doubles league. While it is still in its planning stages, Berreth said that the league will be open to teams of all ages and sexes and will be free of charge.

Berreth said that most tennis tournaments have age and sex restrictions as to who can play with whom, but he has decided to make this league a “true open doubles league.” He said he already has one father-daughter team lined up and expects the matches to be a lot of fun.

Berreth plans to use the good tennis balls from previous tournaments so there will be no cost for the balls and he said that he will provide prizes for the winners.

He added that the prizes will most likely be movie passes or some low-price prize because there will be high school girls playing in the league. Berreth said that if high school tennis players accept prizes over a certain value then they are classified as professional players and will be uneligible for next year’s season. He said that he is not sure of the exact value, but he plans to find out and the prizes for this league will not surpass that amount.

Berreth said that the doubles league will also provide girls that would like to play doubles with a particular person in junior high or high school tennis an opportunity to see how well they play together and get a head start on next year’s tennis season.

Berreth said that the tennis league is still in its planning stages but as long as he can find four sets of doubles to start things off he plans to schedule one game per week this summer.
