Camera to be at Broadway Avenue and Alder Street

MOSES LAKE - Installation of the second photo red-light enforcement system begins this week at the intersection of Broadway Avenue and Alder Street.

Work was scheduled to begin Wednesday night and is expected to continue for three weeks from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Some traffic lanes will be closed at the intersection depending on where the crew is working.

The majority of the installation work affects the eastbound Broadway Avenue lanes, according to a city document. The intersection will remain open during construction. Lane travel may be reduced to one or two lanes causing delays.

The photo enforcement system photographs drivers who fail to stop at red lights resulting in a $112 citation mailed to the registered owner of the vehicle.

The system installed at the intersection will photograph drivers traveling eastbound on Broadway Avenue and turning northbound onto Stratford Road, Police Chief Dean Mitchell said.

Councilmember John Lane asked how the photo enforcement system installed at the intersection of North Stratford Road and Valley Road improved safety.

Mitchell said the number of citations issued to people who fail to stop at the red light has decreased by approximately 50 percent since the installation of the system.

"People are learning," he said.

Lane motioned to allow a work crew to install the system between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. for no more than three weeks to avoid the heaviest traffic flows at the intersection. Councilmember James Liebrecht seconded the motion and it passed unanimously.

The city can install up to nine photo enforcement systems at intersections throughout the city.
