Former Moyie residents and business owners, Elton and Elinore King of Spokane, Wash., are celebrating their 70th anniversary with an open house on Saturday, June 28, in Oregon.

“He is so good to me,” Elinore said about her 95-year-old husband.

“He has been a hard worker and has provided good for me.”

“It’s not always 50-50, it’s sometimes 150-50,” said Elinore about being married for 70 years. “Never go to bed upset at each other. You have to talk it out before you go to sleep.”

“You also have to live at least to be 87 and 95,” she added.

The couple met when Elton stopped his truck and picked up Elinore as she was walking from Bonners Ferry High School to her home in Moyie Springs.

“He picked me up and I was cold,” the 87-year-old said. “I was about froze. That’s the way we met.”

The couple married on June 25, 1938, in Bonners Ferry. Elinore was 17 and her husband was 25.

They later opened a steam mill in Moyie Springs.

“We couldn’t seem to make a living in the winter time up there,” said Elinore King.

They moved to Spokane in 1951, where Elton King worked for Kaiser Aluminum.

They will celebrate their anniversary in Salem, Ore., at their grandson’s home.

They have three children, Jerry King of Battleground, Wash., Bobbi King of Salem, and Judy Barrett and her husband, Jim, of Queen Creek, Ariz.

They also have 19 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
