SANDPOINT - State Sen. Shawn Keough and Rep. Eric Anderson will have competition in this May's primary election.

Donald T. Heckel of Laclede has declared his candidacy for the Republican nomination for the District 1 post held by Keough. Another Laclede resident, Daniel Lawrence, is challenging Anderson's efforts to secure another GOP nod in the primary.

Steve Elgar, a Democrat who lost to Anderson in the 2006 general election, is making another run and unseating Anderson.

No Democrats have filed for District 1 state senator.

Incumbent District 2 state Sen. Joyce Broadsword (R-Cocolalla) is in a three-way race for the Republican nomination. Fellow Cocolalla resident Bill Largen and James Stivers of DeSmet are also competing for the GOP nomination. Democrat Rand C. Lewis of Worley is a shoo-in for the District 2 nomination.

Incumbent District 1 Rep. George Eskridge (R-Dover) has no declared challenger in the primary. Tom Hollingsworth of Bonners Ferry is seeking the Democrat nomination for the post held by Eskridge.
