OTHELLO - The Othello Police Department is trying a new policing method they've never tried before and are finding success.

The police department purchased two new bicycles, Police Chief Steve Dunnagan said. The cost of the bicycles was approximately $1,800. The cost includes a complete outfitting of police gear including lights, storage bags and seats.

When citizens see police officers on bicycles it seems to make them feel more comfortable to communicate, he said. The new traveling method also allows for more access to areas such as parks that can't be reached with a patrol vehicle.

Dunnagan said using the bicycles is an eye-opening experience. Police began implementing the bicycles April 26 and were able to patrol at various places and events including Lions Park and a baseball game. The chief also conducted traffic control on the bicycle.

On a broader spectrum, the bicycles allow for another community policing tactic, he said. Police are placed within the community and are more accessible to citizens.

Children who see police on the bicycles often ask for a ride or look surprised to see the officer, Dunnagan added. The children appear more willing to talk to police too.

The bicycles are a delight to the officers, he said. It allows them to exercise and try something new.
