MOSES LAKE - The crack of the wooden bat, a sound seldom heard on ball fields today will be the dominate sound heard as 16U Babe Ruth players take to the field in Memorial Day weekend's "Legion Sun Devils Wood Bat Classic."

Eleven teams from Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Canada will compete with wooden bats - bats that some players have never used since the adoption of the aluminum bat. The bats are being donated by the Brett Brothers, who manufacture the now specialty bats in Spokane, according to Babe Ruth League President Phil Signorelli.

Both the balls and the bats are donated by companies and individuals who are "trying to keep baseball going," Segnorelli said.

The Moses Lake Sun Devils take the field for the first of their four games against the Seattle Renegades on Saturday at 8 a.m. on the high school ball field.

"We are excited about this weekend," Moses Lake Sun Devils coach Quintz Whitaker said. "I believe we will be very competitive in this tournament."

"If the boys bring their 'A' game, we will come out on top," Whitaker added.

The final four teams will play for the championship on Sunday in playoffs at Larson Playfield with entry free to public at all games.

Anyone one interested in volunteering or would like to assist or donate to the tournaments can contact Phil Signorelli at 509-760-3673.
