Members of Bonners Ferry Eagles Aerie No. 3522 raised $500 for Special Olympics from its annual Mother’s Day Breakfast.

Eagles who helped make and serve 68 omelets included Bill Mostek, April McGuire, Fred Marek, Dennis Johnson, Darnelle Voegele, Doug and Sharon Smith, Patty Voegele and Jeanette Bellmore.

• Carol Kelley and her daughter, Anna Amoth, both of Bonners Ferry, on May 8 saw Irish singer Daniel O’Donnell perform in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada.

A fan of O’Donnell’s music for years, Kelley calls him her “chemical-free antidepressant.”

“Listen to his music and you feel good,” she said.

• Rockey Burkholder and his mother, Valdie Burkholder, recently traveled to Turtle Bay in Hawaii, where they visted Rockey’s brother, Jim Burkholder; Jim’s wife, Ruth; and their daughter, Brittany.

Turtle Bay is a resort that was featured on Live with Regis and Kelly.

• Mary Lou Johnson of Renton, Wash., and her sister, Judy Brady of Anchorage, Alaska, stopped in Bonners Ferry last week. Their late father, C.W. King, is the former owner and publisher of The Herald. King sold The Herald in the early 1950s and passed in 1961 at age 75.

The sisters visited the home where they were raised on the South Hill. Current owners Ruth and Ed Robbins, who are restoring the home, invited the sisters in.

• Jerry Higgs found a rare Oregon White Truffle behind his home in the Marx Subdivision. Jerry said he used to find a lot of them on his 20-acre property on Whidbey Island near Oak Harber, Wash.

“They are highly sought after by those in the culinary arts and are sold by the gram,” he said. “Exceptionally large specimans can sell for over $1,000 each. Truffel harvesters use pigs or dogs to sniff them out.”

• John Thomas of Naples won the scavenger hunt during Customer Appreciation Day at Naples General Store on Saturday. It took him 6 minutes to find 20 items on his grocery list. Store owner Earl Berwick said the next closest time was 10 minutes. More than 500 attended the event, which include free hot dogs and burgers made by Jo Jo Baker.
