Norman J. Nowaczyk, 81, formerly of Kalispell, died Saturday, Oct. 25, 2008, in Mesa, Ariz. The beautiful story of a life well-lived began in a house on the south side of Chicago, where Norman Joseph Nowaczyk was born Feb. 9, 1926.

The third born of six children, he remained in the Chicago area for many years. As a young man he was drafted into the Army and went off to Europe to defend freedom in World War II. He was a veteran of the Battle of the Bulge.

He went on to become a mechanical engineer for Motorola and Zenith.

In 1981, Norm married Barbara Jean, with whom he spent 26 wonderful years. They moved to Leisure World, Mesa, in 1986, where he enjoyed spending time with Barb, golfing and traveling.

Norm had a lifelong interest in flying, so he pursued a pilot's license, was a member of the Civil Air Patrol and spent time flying and taking friends and family on rides.

He took up the harmonica, there starting a tradition of playing "Happy Birthday" to children and grandchildren.

Always eager to serve the community, Norm was very involved in the Lions Club, helping with recycling and various other activities. He earned their highest award for service. He was a part of the woodworking shop, acting as treasurer, and was an amazing woodworker, giving generously of all his projects.

He was a docent at the Champlin Air Museum, where he enjoyed giving tours, especially to young people.

The story of his life on earth ended Oct. 25, but he leaves behind a legacy of integrity and character that has helped bless the next generation and will live on to influence many more to come.

"His greatest decision of life was to receive Jesus Christ as his Savior three months prior to his meeting the Lord."

Norm leaves behind his dear wife, Barbara, of Mesa; six children, Tom Nowaczyk, and Frank and Karen Nowaczyk, all of Illinois, Joann Nowaczyk of Alabama, Chuck and Jayne McLean of Florida, Mike McLean of Arkansas, and Dave and Holly McLean of Montana; 12 grandchildren; four sisters, Dorothy Santella, Millie Genovise, Gloria Bernardi and Trudy Cryer; as well as many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service for Norm will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 10, at Fairview Cemetery on Middle Road in Kalispell.
