Christenson chosen for People to People

Keera Christenson has been chosen for a three-week trip to France, Italy and Spain through People to People Student Ambassadors Program.

Keera, 16, is the daughter of Terasa and Norman Christenson of Bonners Ferry.

A sophomore at Bonners Ferry High School, Keera is a straight “A” student and belongs to the Dance Team and Academic Decathlon. She plans to become a psychiatrist.

She will need to raise $6,739 before taking the trip, which will include stops in Rome, Barcelona, Tuscany and Pisa. Keera is looking for sponsors. Her mother opened an account at Mountain West Bank for donations.

Terasa also plans to hold some fundraisers.

“I’m proud of her and think it’s awesome,” she said about her daughter being chosen for People to People, which provides international educational opportunities for elementary, junior high and high school students.

“She’s really a good student and I think she deserves to do something like this,” Terasa continued.

• Jody Byler of Bonners Ferry will give a free recital at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 24, at Free Methodist Church at 6957 LaBrosse Road.

A student of Verla May Saboe, Byler will perform Bach, Beethoven, Kabalevsky, Palmer and more. Students Jeana Byler and Heidi Brubaker also will perform.

• Gary and Shirley Purdey recently return from a two-week vacation to Puerta Vallarta, Mexico.

They stayed at Lindo Mar Resort and went swimming, and visited a Mayan temple and tequila factory.

• North Idaho College student Jennifer Putnam of Moyie Springs is headed for the National Junior College Athletic Association national soccer tournament in Chandler, Ariz., which opens today, Nov. 20, and runs through Sunday, Nov. 23.

The women’s soccer team is 12-5-2 after beating Western Nebraska Community College in the district tournament semi-finals and beating Johnson County Community College in the finals Nov. 7 and 8.

Freshman forward Natalie Nichols from Post Falls and sophomore goalkeeper Alicia Kahler from Spokane, Wash., were nominated for All-American honors from Region 18.

• Boundary County Boy Scouts collected a total of 1,337 pounds of food for the food bank in Bonners Ferry during a recent drive.

Collecting food from homes were Pack 114, 313 pounds; Boy Scout Troop 114, 159 pounds; Pack 188, 549 pounds; and Troop 188, 316 pounds.

• The Tree of Warmth has been set up in the lobby of the Bonners Ferry Herald in downtown Bonners Ferry. Sponsored by Fry Healthcare Foundation’s Festival of Trees, the tree is already filled with hats and mittens for those in need.

A big thank-you goes to Rho Master Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi for purchasing items. Members are Dixie Whallon, Rhoda Wilson, Phyllis Collyer, Delrene Daniels, Terrene Dickerson, Bev Docherty, Claire Godwin, Chris Helton, Jane Kelley, Marva Kerby, Mary Malone, Joyce Peterson, Donna Plum, Glenda Poston, Anne Regehr, Marian Rosco, Virginia Sanborn, Bev Saul and Anne May Spalding.

Additional winter clothing, including scarves and hats, can be dropped off between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at The Herald office.

• Bonners Ferry High School Girls Soccer Coach John Lindberg congratulated his team members who earned at least a 3.0 during the recent season.

They are Amy Andrews, Emily Pauls, Jamie Green-sky, Kamala Thompson, Briana Watt, Jessica West and Rachael Wilson.

“They not only helped bring a superb soccer season to the state tournament, but also were very successful in their academics.”
