MOSES LAKE - The crowd cheered for the Chiefs as members of the football team raced through a tunnel to tear through a paper banner for Moses Lake's homecoming game.

As the rain steadily fell in the October sky, Moses Lake took advantage of its ground attack to earn the 28-13 Columbia Basin Big-9 league victory.

Moses Lake head coach Greg Kittrell was proud of his team's performance.

"Overall I thought it was a great team win," he said. " There was great play from the defensive unit in general."

The Lions and the Chiefs played through a scoreless first quarter before Moses Lake senior running back Michael Thomas gave the Chiefs a 7-0 advantage in the second quarter.

Thomas scored on a 4-yard touchdown run.

The Chiefs took a 14-0 halftime lead when senior quarterback Josh Loera scored following a 17-yard touchdown run.

Kittrell said his defense played strong for the second consecutive week and was particularly impressed with cornerback Randy Koon and defensive lineman Kyle Porter.

"Koon played great from his cornerback spot," Kittrell said. "Porter had a great night on the defensive line."

Moses Lake held their 14-point advantage through the third quarter and into the fourth quarter when Thomas' second rushing touchdown of the night gave the Chiefs a 21-0 lead.

The Moses Lake offensive line paved the way for four touchdowns and Kittrell said he was impressed with his offensive line's performance.

"Those five guys did pretty well helping Michael (Thomas) move the ball down the field," he said.

Thomas finished the night with 22 carries for 95 yards and two scores.

With the Chiefs leading 21-7, Loera took the snap from center and ran 50 yards to give Moses Lake a 28-7 lead.

Loera finished the night with 13 carries for 14 yards and was 11 of 16 passing for 126 yards.

Kittrell was proud of his team.

"I am happy with the kids," he said. "They put their season back on track. I am excited to see what they can do."

Moses Lake hosts Wenatchee Friday night at Lions Field and Kittrell said his team must prepare this week.

"We need to concentrate on one game at a time," he said. "It's as big as it comes. We practice to win."

Kick off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
