Occupants safely exit Moses Lake home

MOSES LAKE - Three people inside a house on fire Tuesday afternoon were safely evacuated from their Moses Lake home.

A woman reportedly contacted emergency dispatch and advised the Carswell Drive residence she was inside was on fire and she and one other person were trapped in a back bedroom. A third person was also in the residence but all were able to exit the residence before Grant County Fire District No. 5 reached the scene, Battalion Chief Leonard Johnson said.

The accidental fire started in the kitchen, he said. A pan containing grease was reportedly left unattended on a stovetop. The pan allegedly melted and flames reached cabinets and continued to spread throughout the kitchen. It appears the kitchen was destroyed by flames, Johnson said.

Smoke damage was apparent in the living room and other adjacent rooms, he added.

Firefighters placed a fan at the front door of the residence to help remove smoke from the home. Firefighters remained at the scene for about two hours clearing the charred area, he said.

The three occupants at the residence refused transport to a medical facility, Johnson said.

It appears some of the occupants were displaced due to the fire and are being assisted by the American Red Cross, he said.

The Grant County Sheriff's Office also responded to the scene.
