MLCA takes match in five games
WILBUR - The Moses Lake Christian Lady Lions volleyball team earned a road victory Saturday afternoon at Wilbur-Creston High School.
The Lady Lions defeated the Wilbur-Creston Wildcats in five games to earn the non-league victory.
Moses Lake Christian dropped the first game on the road 25-21 before rebounding to win the next two games. The Lady Lions won 25-21 and 25-16 to take a 2-1 advantage over the hometown Wildcats.
Wilbur-Creston would respond with another 25-21 victory over the Lady Lions to even the games at 2-2 and send the match to a fifth game tie-breaker.
The Lady Lions would jump out to a 10-1 lead over the Wildcats in game five before earning the 15-3 victory.
Senior Esther Timofeyev led Moses Lake Christian to victory Saturday.
Timofeyev finished the match with 33 kills, 11 blocks, 12 digs and seven aces.
Moses Lake Christian head volleyball coach Dean Spurbeck was impressed with his senior star.
"Esther pretty much dominated the whole game," he said.
Senior Kaylee Firouzi led the Lady Lions with 31 assists Saturday and Spurbeck said she helped set her team up for the victory.
"Kaylee set well which made Esther look good," he said.
Moses Lake Christian's Melissa Verhage also had nine kills in the winning effort.
Wilbur-Creston is a classification above Moses Lake Christian and Spurbeck said he tries to schedule a match with a school from a higher classification late in the season.
"Beating a team from a league above us helps our confidence," he said. "It kind of showed us that we are starting to peak at the end of the season."
The Lady Lions travel to Easton tonight to take on the Jaguars.
