The defending state champion Whitefish boys tennis team kicked off their season with a road trip south over the weekend.

The Bulldogs went 1-1, dropping their season-opener to Corvallis 2-5, followed by a win over conference-rival Polson 5-2 on Saturday.

Whitefish's Matt Harris notched two straight-set wins in singles play, the first against Corvallis' Jake Sangster and the second against Schad Giles of Polson.

Travis Adams, Tanner Hosek and Jake Morrison all got wins against Polson after all three lost singles matches against Corvallis earlier in the day.

In doubles play, Zach Deister and Matt Whitehead defeated Spencer Fehr and Dillon Murray of Corvallis, 6-2, 5-7, 6-4.

The story was the same for the Whitefish girls, who lost to Corvallis 2-5 but bounced back for a 5-2 victory over Polson.

Against the Lady Blue Devils, McCara Cullen and Anne Miller notched a 6-4 win in the third set. Becca Rozar and Hannah Weaver won 7-5 in their third set against Corvallis as well. The Whitefish girls were swept in four matches in singles action.

The Whitefish teams have not had much time to practice due to snow covering their outdoor courts.

The Bulldog boys take on Columbia Falls this Friday at 3:30 p.m. (depending on the weather), and the girls will be in Columbia Falls at the same time.
