The Troy High School tennis team opened the season Saturday with a trip to Valley Christian.

The Trojan boys dropped a 4-2 decision while the girls tied, 3-3. Troy had several players missing because of Spring Break.

Cassidy Hand had an impressive 6-0, 6-0 victory over Valley Christian’s Celina Barnot at No. 2 singles. Jackie Pepiot won in her varsity tennis debut with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 decision over Sarah Larson. Jordan Stapley took a victory over Sarah King, 6-4, 6-3.

“We only had five girls because of Spring Break and three are first-year tennis players but they played well and were able to tie the match,” Troy assistant Nancy Prieve said.

Valley Christian won two doubles matches by forfeit to force the tie with the Lady Trojans. Sarah Helmrick won an exhibition singles match.

For the boys, Jake Higgins won at No. 3 singles over Josiah Peterson, 2-6, 6-2, 6-0. Brandon Rebo took a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Donnie Nurse.

Jesse Day and Shado Garrett both lost their singles matches but they were both very competitive. Morgan Parsons beat Day, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 and Shane Hoffman defeated Garrett, 3-6, 7-6 (12-10), 6-2.

Prieve said Day and Garrett won an exhibition match over Valley Christian’s top doubles team. Also in exhibition play, Creede Garcia won two singles matches while Pat Hickman and Rebo each won one.

The tennis team played at home on Tuesday against Libby and is scheduled to play at home again on Wednesday when Clark’s Fork, Idaho, visits.

Troy Softball Takes Two From Drummond

The Drummond High School softball team rolled into Troy Saturday with high hopes of ending a long streak of being on the wrong end of the score, and for half of the first game of the doubleheader, looked like they had every chance of doing just that. However the host Trojans exploded for nine runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, and then shut down Drummond in the top of the fifth, winning 14-3. Troy kept the bats hot in the second game, plating 21 runs to end that game early as well, 21-11.
