Fifty new trees will be planted along Highway 2 in Libby as part of a spring tree project, Vicky Lawrence of the Libby Tree Board announced last week.

The trees will appear from Idaho Avenue to Empire Foods as part of the tree board’s desire to improve the appearance along the highway and contribute to its goal to “Plant the Town.”

The trees were purchased with grant money from the Department of Natural Resources and Conservation, the Lincoln County Community Foundation, the City of Libby and donations from private individuals in the community.

Lawrence said there would also be removal of some conifers on Montana and Idaho avenues at the request of property owners with concerns about threats to their property.

“We will replant with deciduous trees that will be safer,” Lawrence said. “We will also be removing several other smaller deciduous trees that are ill-suited as boulevard trees or are diseased. Our goal is a healthy, sustainable urban forest with appropriate trees in appropriate places.”
