A national exhibit of new work by artist Robert Rickard, “Terra Mia,” is scheduled to open Aug. 22 at the Silver Fish Gallery in Eureka.

“The impetus for this new body of work emanates from my interest in earth imagery,” Rickard said. “A string of lakes, a path disappearing over rolling hills, or an aerial view of Avignon; these are just a few of the inspirations for this show.”

To coincide with the exhibit, a short documentary explores the creative process and techniques employed, as well as offer a personal view of the artist and his studio environment.

Rickard built a reputation for his sculptures, wall art and iconic clocks. He uses a scientific approach to his sculptures. After using a hand-held plasma cutter to carve his designs into the base metal, each sculpture is then coated with other metals, typically copper, bronze and iron. Each of the metals reacts differently to the chemical patinas and dye oxides with which the pieces are finished, creating a rich palette of hues.

As a youngster, Rickard became enamored with the way his set designs transported the viewer to another dimension. That training gave him insight when preparing commissioned installations and making the piece unique. Rickard has received inspiration from working on projects with architects, designers and collectors.

Rickard is an honored Niche Award finalist and is a juried participant in several exclusive shows.

“I have been deeply humbled and grateful for the way that I have been welcomed into galleries and collector’s homes,” Rickard said.
