COULEE CITY — In the newest chapter of David versus Goliath, it was the big guys who managed to stave off defeat.

A much taller Davenport squad invaded Almira/Coulee-Hartline’s home digs and managed to pull away for a 71-60 win Tuesday night.

The difference according to Warriors’ coach Scott Isaak was Davenport’s ability to score off of missed shots by ACH.

“We’d get a look and shoot and crash the boards against a team that were 6-9 6-5 6-3 and they would send two down the other way,” Isaak said. “They probably scored 25 points on transition.”

ACH (0-1), with no starter taller than 6-1, did manage to lead after the first quarter, 15-12, before their poor shooting night began to take its toll.

Derek Isaak led the Warriors with 31 points but the next highest scorer was Brandon Boutain who chipped in 12.

“Derek probably had 16 points midway through the second and then they put a box-and-one on him,” Pete Isaak said. “We just didn’t have any other kid who could hit a shot. Still they are good shooters and we will turn it around.”

The Warriors trailed 55-43 going into the fourth quarter and managed to chip away before finally falling short.

“We had our most success when we put some pressure on them.” Pete Isaak said. “The guys never gave up but things just didn’t go our way. Davenport is a good club and they will go far in 2B. They just play good basketball.”
