SANDPOINT — A Bayview man pleaded not guilty Monday to using a neighbor’s pickup truck without permission, a vehicle which he totaled while driving drunk on U.S. Highway 95.

Karl Lawrence Hengeveld’s two-day trial on the felony charge is set for February. If convicted, he faces up to five years in prison.

Hengeveld was charged following a two-vehicle collision at the Sagle Road turnoff on Oct. 21. Witnesses told Idaho State Police that Hengeveld was using the highway’s center turn lane as a passing lane when he crashed into the rear of a Jeep. The occupants of the Jeep, a pregnant woman and her husband, escaped serious injury, the report said.

Hengeveld was also charged with driving under the influence, possession of drugs and paraphernalia and driving without privileges. He pleaded guilty to drunken driving and possession of drug paraphernalia and the other charges were dismissed, according to court documents.

Judge Debra Heise ordered Hengeveld on Dec. 4 to serve concurrent, 180-day jail sentences with 150 days suspended. He was fined $630 and placed on probation for two years. Hengeveld’s driving privileges were revoked for one year.

Hengeveld, 62, is accused of taking the Toyota Tacoma involved in the crash from a neighbor who was hospitalized after attempting to take his own life with a handgun, the police report said.
