Firefighters saved a Naples area home after a Monday blaze started in the basement near a wood stove.

South Boundary Fire Chief Tony Rohrwasser said the cause of the fire at the Deep Creek Loop home of Steve and Susan Alverez remains undetermined.

“It’s really hard to say,” Rohrwasser said. “The wood stove was in fine working shape. We left the wood in the stove and it was still burning.”

He believes the fire ignited a couch in a downstairs room and spread. The was the only area with fire damage. The downstairs also had heat damage, while the rest of the home had smoke damage. The Alverezes could not stay in the home, which is insured and can be repaired, Rohrwasser said.

He praised firefighters for an job well done. South Boundary was assisted by Paradise Valley and North Bench fire districts.

“Things just worked well and quick, and we got it (the fire) down to one room,” Rohrwasser said. “We had a lot of help at the time. We had a full group out there and we had mutual aid.”

Steve Alverez was in a nearby shop when he heard the smoke detectors going off in the home at about 3:30 p.m. He called 911.

Volunteer firefighters arrived on scene within 12 minutes, Rohrwasser said. Assistant fire chief Wayne Wilkerson, who last week was named South Boundary’s firefighter of the year by his pears, ran command.
