MOSES LAKE — Moses Lake voters approved a replacement maintenance and operation levy to support school programs.

The proposed levy, expected to generate $30.9 million in three years, passed by 53.23 percent according to Tuesday’s preliminary count.

The number of “yes” votes was 3,712 and the number of “no” votes was 3,261.

“We understand the economic hard times and appreciate the Moses Lake School District community said yes to the children of Moses Lake, to continue the programs and services we have had available,” said Michelle Price, assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction.

The estimated collection rate for 2010 is $3.08 per $1,000 in assessed property value.

“The Citizens for Progress in Education (committee) appreciate all the support in the community for making this campaign successful,” said committee co-Chair Mike Bolander.

The levy pays for textbooks, curriculum materials, athletic programs, staff training, extracurricular programs, maintenance, computer labs, special services, library services, custodial services, health services and school buses.

Equipment for music, sports, high school science and playgrounds and are paid for by the levy.

Teachers and staff for certain programs are supported by levy funds as well. Elementary school P.E. teachers, music teachers and counselors, a dropout prevention specialist, technology staff, school resource officers and secondary school security staff are all supported by the levy.

“Thank you to the voters for supporting us,” said school board member Lew Mason.

Board President Allan Burritt said the district appreciates the support.
