Bonners Ferry High School senior Riley Boorman will serve as a non-voting member of the  Bonners Ferry City Council.

 City council approved the position in an effort to educate students about city government.   Future student city council members will be chosen by the  high school.  Those eligible will be students from Bonners Ferry and  Riverside high schools, and high-school age students who are home-schooled. 

 Council members said they were excited about the idea and thought it would be an excellent chance for students to observe how city government is ran in efforts to draw more students to civic and city careers. 

Boorman whose father Stephen Boorman is the city administrator, is involved with band, yearbook, student council, National Honors Society, Natural Helpers and was Sandpoint Elks’ Student of the Month for November.  

The city council chose  Boorman because of her qualifications.  They are giving this opportunity and wanted to get started right away, the city council thought holding a separate election this late in the school year would delay the program.

The council members have not determined the length of he term but believe one-term (school year) would be best. The representative will report to the high school about city council meetings.

Johns Langs, president of the city council, said it takes time to learn how things operate, and the more time the student serves, the more the student will get out of the experience.
