EPHRATA — The Othello Huskies wrestling team improved to 4-2 in Central Washington Athletic Conference competition following Thursday night’s 49-20 win over the Ephrata Tigers.
The Tigers got on the scoreboard first when sophomore Deion Ducksworth pinned Othello junior Jusdin Lynch in 3:09 to give the hosting Tigers a 6-0 advantage after one match.
Othello would respond one match later when sophomore Paul Eppich pinned freshman Mitchell Brown in 40 seconds to tie the match at 6-6. The Huskies took their first lead of the night at 103 pounds when freshman Sergio Montes pinned Ephrata freshman Alex Gallegos in 1:01 for a 12-6 Othello advantage.
The Othello lead wouldn’t last long because Ephrata sophomore Tyler Childs would pin sophomore Gilbert Villa in 5:01 during their 112-pound bout. Childs’ win would help Ephrata to a 12-12 tie through four CWAC matches.
With the match tied at 12-12, Othello senior Jake Smith squared off with Ephrata junior Anthony Bush at 119 pounds.
Bush and Smith battled through the first period before a technical violation against Bush gave Smith a penalty point. Smith frustrated Bush the entire match on Smith’s way to another 5-2 victory over Bush.
The CWAC rivals met at the Mat Classic XX state tournament last February in the medalist round when Smith defeated Bush 5-2 for seventh place.
Smith’s victory at 119 pounds sparked an Othello run which saw the Huskies win five of their next six matches on their way to the CWAC dual meet victory.
Ephrata senior and Mat Classic XX seventh-place finisher Quinton Hendrickson pinned Othello sophomore Eddie Garza in 3:01 to give the Tigers a spark at 145 pounds.
