SANDPOINT — The fire danger remains high in parts of the Panhandle, the Idaho Department of Lands warns.

Spring and early-summer moisture has led to prodigious growth in grasses and brush and a recent span of hot and dry weather continues to dry out forest fuels. When cured, this season’s growth will provide an abundance of fine, flashy fuels, which increases the threat of fast-moving wildland fires.

The IDL office in Sandpoint has been busy suppressing about a dozen human-caused blazes this season. Holdover fires from slash piles burned in the spring and fall have been major causes of recent blazes. Those who have conducted such burning operations are advised to carefully check burn areas for any smoldering debris.
