Candidates begin filing for election

COLUMBIA BASIN — Candidates have begun filing for the pending fall elections in Grant and Adams counties.

The race for state representative for the Ninth Legislative District, covering Adams County and Othello, has three candidates registered. Pat Hailey, of Mesa, Darin Watkins, of Palouse, and Susan Fagan, of Pullman, are all seeking the office and all three listed the Republican party as their preference.

With three candidates, one will be eliminated during the primary election Aug. 18. The top two candidates receiving the most votes will face off in the Nov. 3 general election.

In Grant County, two people have filed to run for prosecutor, according to the Grant County Auditor’s Office. Robert Schiffner and Albert Lin have both filed. Current prosecutor Angus Lee had not filed as of Tuesday.

Contested races in Grant County include:

  • Coulee City mayor — Otto Jensen and Philip Isaak
  • Moses Lake councilmember position 2 — Mayor Ron Covey and Karen Liebrecht
  • Moses Lake councilmember position 5 — Councilmember James Liebrecht and David Curnel
  • Port of Moses Lake commissioner position 2 — Commissioner David Plate and Brian P. McGowan

Many offices have candidates listed unopposed.

Candidates have until Friday to file their candidacy at the respective county auditor office.
