MOSES LAKE — Fire damaged a home on South Dahlia Drive in Moses Lake early Saturday morning.

A touch-lamp fell over and set a mattress on fire in the basement, according to Moses Lake Assistant Fire Chief Brett Bastian.

“The homeowner didn’t notice it was turned on and when they went down to move the mattress is flamed on them,” he said. “It got inside of the wall and traveled.”

The fire began with the mattress and burned a couch.

“It was a pretty heavy fuel load,” said Bastian.

It was believed there were three family members in the house at the time the fire started, but all family members were found uninjured, he said.

The fire moved from the basement up along the inside and outside of a wall and into the roof line.

“There was substantial damage to the home. They will be out of the home for a while … there was structural damage to the roof,” Bastian said.

Three rooms received substantial fire damage with the rest of the house damaged by smoke and water.

“The basement had the most water damage,” he added.

A firefighter received a minor leg injury battling the blaze and received treatment at Samaritan Healthcare.

It took firefighters roughly 20 minutes to extinguish the flames and spent another 20 minutes tearing the roof open to get to hot spots.

The victims were reported to have homeowners insurance.
